The dermatoglyphic findings in a Cuban family with the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome are reported. The family consisted of the parents who were first cousins and their three children. A new classification of zygodactylous patterns was used. Characteristic dermatoglyphic patterns which appeared in these cases were representative of the syndrome. Dermatoglyphics also helped to discover minor expressions of syndactyly and showed that all the members of the family had zygodactylous patterns on palms and soles.

RESUMO

Dermatoglyphics of six patients with absence of thumb are described. Two specific abnormal configurations were seen in the palmar area. In the first, there was no axial triradius and the course of the ridges in the proximal part of the palm was transversal. In the second, a peculiar distal loop on the radial border was present with a palmar triradius. These abnormal patterns are probably due to the absence of a thenar volar pad or the presence of an abnormal one when the ridges are formed.

RESUMO

Finger and palm prints of 220 Cuban mongols, all trisomic 21, were statistically compared with those of a group of 400 normal Cuban individuals. The most important dermatoglyphic findings in the patients were: an excess of ulnar loops on the 2nd and 3rd fingers, and radial loops on the 4th and 5th fingers; a paucity of patterns in the thenar/I area; more hypothenar true patterns, specially ulnar loops, higher percentages of patterns in the II and III interdigital spaces with less true patterns in the IV interdigital space; distal position t" of the axial triradius and large atd angles of more than 70 degrees; high values of the main-line index; predominance of radial type of the C line and higher frequencies of type 11 of the D line. The simian crease, especially the complete variety, had more diagnostic value than the Sydney line. Parathenar patterns which did not seem to have been described previously in mongols, were significantly more frequent in the patients than in controls. The results are very similar to those observed in other countries and it seems that the peculiar dermatoglyphic pattern of patients with Down syndrome is not affected by ethnic influences.

RESUMO

A dermatoglyphic study was made in seven patients with Poland anomalad. The ipsilateral hand showed great variability of the defect. The patterns were typical when the hand was synbrachydactylic. When there was only brachydactyly, there were peculiar configurations. Though the hand on the side of the defect may seem normal, some patterns are infrequent and on the "normal" hand on the other side, rare dermatoglyphic types were found.

RESUMO

Seven patients with Poland anomalad, 6 males and one female, are reported. Four were affected on the right and 3 on the left side. The clinical, radiological and cytogenetic findings in these cases are discussed. In all the patients the nipples were asymmetric, the one on the affected side was sometimes set higher or lower than the one on the normal side, in relation to the extent of the muscle defect. One patient had coloboma of the iris. There was a greater variability of the defect of the upper extremity and especially of the ipsilateral hand than of the muscle anomaly. The hand seemed almost normal in 3 cases but these cases seem to represent the variability of the malformation. All cases were sporadic. Delivery was complicated in 4/7 and one patient had a twin brother with myelomeningocele.
